Halima Aden a Somali-American model has become the first Muslim model to appear in Sports Illustrated magazine wearing a hijab and swimsuit.
Halima participated in Miss Minnesota USA pageant, received national attention and was signed to IMG Models.
Aden was born in Kenya at the Kakuma refugee camp where she lived until she moved to the United States.
According to CNN, Halima Aden traveled back to her home country Kenya to shoot for the magazine.
Halima was photographed serving looks from head to toe. She wore a swimsuit by Muslim women called ‘burkini’.
She said “I keep thinking [back] to six-year-old me who, in this same country, was in a refugee camp. So to grow up to live the American dream [and] to come back to Kenya and shoot for SI in the most beautiful parts of Kenya – I don’t think that’s a story that anybody could make up.”
She posted a picture of herself on instagram with a caption; “Don’t change yourself… Change the GAME!! Ladies anything is possible!!! Being in Sport illustrated is so much bigger than me. It’s sending a message to my community and the world that women of all different backgrounds, looks, upbringing… can stand together and be celebrated…

Don’t change yourself .. Change the GAME!! Ladies anything is possible!!! Being in Sports Illustrated is so much bigger than me. It’s sending a message to my community and the world that women of all different backgrounds, looks, upbringings… can stand together and be celebrated. Thank you so much @si_swimsuit & the entire team for giving me this incredible opportunity.
In 2018 she was the first model of colour to wear a hijab on the cover of British Vogue.
